| Earlier this year, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) released an important report titled “Making Research Data Publicly Accessible: Estimates of Institutional & Researcher Expenses.” Stemming from the NSF-funded Realities of Academic Data Sharing (RADS) project, the report illuminates the financial commitments that institutions have undertaken to align with public access and data-sharing mandates. The full report can be accessed here.
In our upcoming webinar, Cynthia Hudson Vitale,Shawna Taylor, and Jonathan Petters will explore the report’s insights on institutional expenses. They will shed light on costs shouldered not only by central campus offices—including libraries, IT departments, and research administrations—but also by researchers themselves as they engage in a variety of data-sharing activities. Join us for an informative session that explores both the challenges and investments associated with making research data widely available.
Date: 4 December 2024 @ 14:00 UTC |

Discover how the Data Stewardship Award has propelled past winners to new heights in their careers.
Xiaogang (Marshall) Ma received the WDS Data Stewardship Award in 2014 when he was a postdoctoral fellow working at the Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He joined the University of Idaho in 2016 and is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science. Marshall has continued his research interests in semantic web, knowledge graphs, general AI technologies, and their applications in Earth and environmental sciences.
"I would say the WDS Data Stewardship Award has had a multi-fold influence on my work. It is for the early-career professionals. Receiving the award in 2014 was a big encouragement for me to see the value of the work on data management and the methods and technologies needed, and a driving force for me to continue the work in this field."
Marshall's participation in WDS community activities has facilitated connections to many individual researchers and organizations, such as those in RDA, CODATA, and AGU. |
