WDS Executive Director Update
Dear WDS-ECR members,

Once again, thank you for your willingness to complete a survey to benefit data repositories. A few months ago, you were invited to complete a survey from the WDS Scientific Committee’s Subcommittee on Standards and Certification. We appreciate that feedback and look forward to sharing the outcome of those findings soon. Join us in Costa Rica at RDA P23 to hear our first survey results from the Subcommittee’s survey.

On 23 September, you were again invited to give your opinion via a survey, this time about the RDA/WDS TRUST Principles Outreach and Adoption Working Group. This survey is still open for your participation! Please see the information and link below.

WDS appreciates that we have emailed you twice this year for your feedback and encourages your continued support of these research activities.

Please reach out to WDS-IPO@utk.edu with further questions or for more information.

Thank you,

Meredith P. Goins

Previous WDS Data Stewardship Award Winner Ethan Welty
Previous WDS Data Stewardship Award Winner Ethan Welty
Ethan Welty, the 2020 recipient of the WDS Data Stewardship Award, has made significant contributions to glaciological research and data management. As a glaciologist, he specializes in analyzing glacier time-lapse photography and has led transformative projects such as version 3 of the global Glacier Thickness Database (GlaThiDa) for the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS). This effort marked a major advancement in compiling glacier ice thickness data, a crucial element for monitoring and understanding glacier dynamics. His excellent work with WGMS created an opportunity to be recognized through the Data Stewardship Award nomination. Welty was nominated by WGMS and presented the award at IDW 2023. The award served as a reminder of appreciation for his hard work and established him as an expert in his field. Ethan also developed an open-source environment to streamline updates to GlaThiDa, ensuring the data is continuously verified and accessible for future research.

Beyond his work with WGMS, Ethan co-founded Falling Fruit, a nonprofit organization promoting urban foraging through the mapping of edible plants worldwide. Currently, he serves as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich, where he continues his commitment to glacier monitoring, data management, and collaboration with global research communities. His diverse career path, which also includes roles as a data and software consultant, reflects a dedication to advancing both glaciological research and open, reproducible data practices.

WDS Association of Research Libraries Webinar
WDS Association of Research Libraries Webinar
Earlier this year, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) released an important report titled “Making Research Data Publicly Accessible: Estimates of Institutional & Researcher Expenses.” Stemming from the NSF-funded Realities of Academic Data Sharing (RADS) project, the report illuminates the financial commitments that institutions have undertaken to align with public access and data-sharing mandates. The full report can be accessed via the DOI link.

In our upcoming webinar, Cynthia Hudson Vitale,Shawna Taylor, and Jonathan Peters will explore the report’s insights on institutional expenses. They will shed light on costs shouldered not only by central campus offices—including libraries, IT departments, and research administrations—but also by researchers themselves as they engage in a variety of data-sharing activities. Join us for an informative session that explores both the challenges and investments associated with making research data widely available.
